The interview process lasted over a month and involved an unreasonable amount of unpaid strategic labor. I was assigned a technical exercise to restructure a core architectural domain of the product. While the task was framed as a 6 hour exercise, the requirements for multiple IA models, an 8 week strategic roadmap, and wireframes realistically required closer to 16 hours to complete at the expected seniority level.
Following the final on-site, the company stalled for 12 days with repeated promises to circle back "asap" while simultaneously requesting continued access to my Figma file. The process reached a breaking point when, after a month of engagement, the recruiter requested another week of "benchmarking" against the other candidate. Within 24 hours of me calling out this inefficient timeline and requesting that the role be leveled at the Director level to match the strategic output, I received a generic form rejection.
This experience illustrates a process that prioritizes high-level uncompensated consulting over professional respect for a candidate's time. It also highlights a significant structural gap in how the company values Design leadership parity compared to its Engineering and Product Management peers.
