It was a phone interview with about five people on their side. They started out with "Tell us about yourself." I started out with a work history which was not what they wanted to hear. That turned into "Tell us how you would help us." Without knowing where they were going, I had to say that the first thing I would is study the environment and systems looking for weaknesses.
Basically, they wanted a Unix system admin type and I am a developer. Admin types come in all levels. Some are glorified secretaries and others are ultra-heavy duty technical types. Installing patches and keeping track of what has been installed requires moderate secretarial skills. Understanding that a patch is required and why is pretty technical. Telling the vendor that a patch is required can be ultra-heavy duty technical. While I view myself as heavy duty technical, they felt that there was too little intersection for me to do the job.
