First round was a purely technical interview (was not informed about the type of interview ahead of time but admittedly an flawed assumption on my part). I was tested on conceptual questions about machine learning and on things that were on my resume e.g. models used in a past project. Interviewer did not ask about interest at all and it was solely a test of fundamental concepts and skills.

The team lead conducted the interview, a very nice lady and said there would be guidance throughout the journey as a beginner. Job will be filled with tons of reading but if you are not a reading person, thats not for you
