      Candidatura

Candidatei-me online. Fiz uma entrevista na empresa GotPrint (Burbank, CA).

      Entrevista

I was called in for an in-person interview. Upon my arrival, I was buzzed into a room where I was told to wait. I was not offered coffee, water, or an opportunity to freshen up in the bathroom. I received a job application to fill out and once I was done, the application was collected and I was lead into a room with an HR representative and two Marketing dept. employees. The HR representative either took notes or was busy doing other work. The two people who interviewed me didn't tell me what their roles were at the company--I had to ask them. They basically had me reiterate what was already on my resume. This made me feel like they didn't bother to review it prior to the interview. Not a good sign. I asked questions about company culture and benefits. What struck me most was: 1. This company doesn't understand how creatives work. They can't wear headphones at their desks, for example. 2. There are no wellness programs or continuing education opportunities. 3. 3 days of sick leave. Most companies roll sick leave into PTO now. No one has the flu with fever for 3 days. 4. Business casual attire 4 days a week. This is absurd because if you're in a noncustomer facing position, there is no reason why you can't dress in casual clothes (within reason). 5. I asked for a tour of the office and I asked to see where I would be sitting if I took the job. I was refused. Is this a print company or the Pentagon? 6. I wasn't informed of any employee appreciation events or community service opportunities. After reflecting on this interview, my assessment is that this company is antiquated in its policies and thinking. It doesn't strike me as one that has much of a work-life balance. The critical Glassdoor reviews are spot-on and their sentiments are echoed by the insights I've also received from current GotPrint employees. My advice to the company is as follows: 1. Take the time to prepare for interviews. Ask real questions and get to know your candidates. I have interviewed potential candidates at previous companies and I know what a good job interview looks and feels like. 2. Jazz up your benefits package. Make it appealing to potential hires. 3. Understand how creatives work and give them opportunities to thrive at your company. 4. Be hospitable. Make candidates feel welcome. I was not offered a position here. If they did make an offer, I would have turned it down.
