Entrevista

Cycles of interviews with company leaders. Some segmentation where one focused on job skills, one on culture/fit, one on future aspirations, etc. It was a block of interviews running one after the other each lasting around 45 minutes. Nothing too unique about the interview structure. Standard stuff and each leadership team member doing the interviews was generally equipped to have the conversation.

Perguntas da entrevista
  • Heavy on my background and why I really want the job. Some awkward questions about how I think I'd "fit" in their culture--a culture left undefined but likely influenced by the leaders who were all of the same gender, race, age, and life stage.

The video interview was your standard product interview. They sent a homework assignment after which involved market research (free work) and something highly technical even though this was not a technical project management gig. I wasted a whole weekend.

- Interview was with Chief People Officer (CPO) via Zoom - Did not seem excited to chat/low energy - Vague interview questions, did not know his own sales tech stack - Asked what I currently make in terms of salary...ILLEGAL to ask that now - Couldn't wait until the call was over because it was so bad

Entrevista

I think it's very rude and inconsiderate of peoples time to give a very long written exam that requires hours of research, only to cancel on the process midway. They need to pay people for this or only review one person at a time. I went through the first interview (seems like most people do as it's with someday who does basic prescreening and doesn't speak english well) and was told to do the test and scheduled my 2nd interview. And after I spent hours on this written test (which has things like analyzing all of their competitors and saying why their co is better)I got an email saying the position was no longer available. Very unprofessional and ill-mannered.

Perguntas da entrevista
  • Some of the written exam: 1. What is GovPredict's mission? 2. Who are GovPredict's competitors? For each, lay out an argument for why a prospective client should switch from the competitor to GovPredict. 3. What segment of the market should GovPredict focus its efforts on selling to, and why? 4. How do you conduct need discovery? Describe the process in detail. A trade association decided they were not interested in GovPredict when you spoke to them in the fall of 2018. It’s fall of 2019 and you are revisiting the account. Describe, step by step, your process from when you are given the assignment to when you qualify this lead and pass them off to an account executive. Include the text of the emails you would send / content of phone calls you would make -- anytime you refer to a conversation or a discussion, including the specific arguments or points that you would make.

I applied online and got a phone call a few days later from "a VP" (not a recruiter). He asked if I had any availability the next day for a zoom call. It went well & he was a nice enough guy. Nothing terribly in-depth, just questions about my work history and he told me a little about the open position. I sent a follow-up/thank you email and then...nothing. After a week or so, I sent another email and...nothing. I'm writing this review in hopes that the GP team sees it, and can make sure it doesn't happen to others. I understand not every company will send a "no thank you" email after you apply, but I think it's common courtesy to do so after two touch points with the candidate, especially a face-to-face zoom call. Maybe this is why it's not common for sales execs to reach out to candidates first instead of the recruiting team, but it also makes you question core values of said exec team, if they don't take 30 seconds to thank you for your time and let you know they are going in a different direction.

Entrevista

Had a screening interview with a recruiter first. After that first interview, had an hour long interview which was split in half - one interview with head of sales, one interview with one of the founders of the company. Both conversations were relatively relaxed and asked about my background, experience, and interest in the company. Had the opportunity to ask many questions.

Big picture: - Pro: It was quick, and the recruiter was very responsive (given the nature of the job search, this was a blessing). - Con: The hiring manager was in the stage of shipping a major product and consequently seemed a bit disengaged in the interview. Also, the company doesn't give feedback on your interview for this position according to the recruiter. Details: - I applied on LinkedIn trying to get into an entry-level role in a budding company with the mindset of further understanding and honing my skill set as well as contributing to a bigger cause - GovPredict happened to be one. I heard back from the recruiter a day later asking me to schedule a Zoom conference call. - The hiring manager was on-line in time for the interview (not too early nor too late). The first five minutes though he was interrupted by another sudden call and explained afterward that he was in the middle of shipping a major product. He then went on with the following order of questions for the next 15-20 minutes: 1. Tell me about yourself 2. Tell me about that specific experience in your resume 3. A screening question (listed below) 4. What do you know about GovPredict 5. What are your expectations of the APM role 6. What are your salary expectations 7. Are you okay with a take-home assessment (used to assess the writing and technical capabilities of the APM that can't be tested in a regular phone/video screening) 8. Any questions for me - I had many questions and asked two; however, the hiring manager said that because of the major product shipping thing he had to attend to, he had to cut the interview short by about 5 minutes and encouraged me to send the rest of my questions to the recruiter so that she can send it to him via GovPredict's staff portal. Post-interview: - I was upbeat and sent the questions to the recruiter. I also learned a lot too from the hiring manager about how his prior experiences molded his approach to product management and how GovPredict's products are approaching political cynicism in the younger voting generation. The recruiter, however, responded with a rejection notice the next day, with no opportunity for me to try the take-home assessment. - So naturally, I asked her for any feedback on my interview (because that's a way to learn what you did well and not did so well on, so you can do better in future interviews). She got back to me a few hours later saying literally: "Unfortunately, we don't provide feedback for APM" without stating why that was the case. Now I just have the hiring manager's questions to be answered; given my rejection though, he most likely may not answer those questions. Overall impression: - GovPredict has a compelling mission statement - "to make political information more transparent and accessible." Given the hiring manager's enthusiasm for my answer to learn as much as possible, I would imagine GovPredict's interview to adopt the same mentality for its applicants. Hence, it was a letdown to not be given feedback about my video interview, which ironically goes against the company's mission on increasing transparency. However, I have to commend GovPredict for being so responsive throughout the application process (probably due to their small agile size); it gives applicants like myself hope.
