      Entrevista

I spoke to their internal recruiter after being introduced through a popular job search web platform. I thought I would be interviewing for a Senior Front-End Developer role. The recruiter explained that the position was called Front-End Samurai. She said that they don't have conventional titles because they have a "flat" organization and they don't want people to take their titles too seriously. This did not sit well with me. I don't want "Samurai" on my resume. That would make me look like a joke. Besides, the CEO and CTO have titles, so "flat hierarchy" is not really flat; it just means that anyone below C-level is a drone. The job description is what most companies would call a Lead Developer. That is to say, that in addition to being an individual contributor, the candidate would be responsible for "managerial tasks" related to the team. She also made clear that the CEO and CTO have been managing the front-end team and were looking for someone to take that responsibility off of their plates. However, this person would not have a team lead job title and would not be recognized as in charge of the team, per the "flat" org philosophy. So basically, they wanted me to take on the responsibility of being a team lead without empowering me to do or giving me that title. That's a raw deal. The person I spoke to seemed to have a bit of an attitude when I pointed out that what she had described was in fact a manager or team lead role. At one point I mentioned that I was looking for more of an individual contributor role and she reacted as if I had said something inappropriate or offensive. Over all, it was a very uncomfortable call. I chose not to pursue the position any further.

Hi! I am sorry you had a negative experience. I can address a few of your concerns here. 1. The CEO and CTO actually do not have those titles - they are Master Sensei and Chief Ninja. We are trying to establish a fun and down to earth atmosphere that is separate from the Wall Street title driven one. 2. We do in fact have team leads and managers, I am sorry if the company titles gave you the wrong impression. We will make sure this is more clear. By flat structure we are implying that is is very easy to progress in the company - e.g. someone 2 years out of school that is outstanding doesn't need to do a normal "analyst to associate" progression, they might be made the head of the department. We view this as being flat, but perhaps our use of wording is faulty here. Your feedback has been well received and noted and we will try to improve the interview process in the future.
