Explaining that it is typically a case by case scenario depending on the severity of the issues and a variety of other factors but that it always starts with a conversation, meeting the employee where they are at, making sure nothing (personally or professionally) is preventing them from continued success and removing barriers where necessary, and if underperformance doesn't improve after open feedback and support, follow a progressive disciplinary approach with warning, performance improvement plan, and final decisions leading up to termination.
