For any programmer, SQL knowledge is a must and we always ensure candidates have good knowledge in SQL and PL/sql (if needed). And the other thing, you mentioned about Life balance. We tell every fresher at the time of interview itself only one thing... Spend time, learn things properly and prove yourself. As you agree, you didn't learn technologies properly in your colleges what software industry exactly wants. We give every fresher ample time to learn and lot of candidates succeeded by learning the things properly and proving themselves. About time and money, in fact, company loses both if company is not hiring right candidates with right intentions. There is no waste to you because you are learning things better here which you haven't learned anywhere else.
