I went through a four-month interview process with this organization, and unfortunately, the experience raised serious concerns about their internal decision-making and values alignment. The process felt stalled by decision paralysis, with extended delays between each stage and little transparency about timelines or expectations.
Most concerning was being asked to complete non-compensated spec work, in this case, drafting a full policy agenda with no clear or reasonable timeframe provided. For an organization that publicly positions itself as understanding and advocating for marginalized communities, it is deeply contradictory to ask candidates for free labor. Meaningful DEI commitments include respecting candidates’ time and expertise, which means ensuring all work is compensated.
A best practice would be to provide every candidate with the same clearly defined assignment, set fair and transparent time limits, and offer compensation for substantive deliverables. Anything less undermines the credibility of an organization that claims to center equity and inclusion.
