I originally applied online for the UI/UX position at the Berlin office. Three days after applying, a talent manager reached out to me by phone to see if I would be interested in transferring my application to the same position at the Cambridge office. I said yes. The chief designer in Boston seemed to like my background and I was immediately short-listed. A second talent manager reached out to schedule an in-person interview. I was then given a design challenge in preparation for the interview in which I was asked to re-design an existing feature of the Kayak website and design a hypothetical new section of the website utilizing the brand style guidelines. The challenge(s) were pretty straightforward. This all took place within a week of applying for the position.
The interview was ~4 hours long. It started with a round-table presentation of my work on the Kayak design challenge followed by a presentation of my portfolio. All of the company's designers and senior design management (both mobile and web teams) were present. There were ~12 people in the room. I then had a series of small group meetings where I had the opportunity to speak with several designers. The first meeting was with both the Chief of Web Design and the Chief of Mobile Design. The second meeting was with the Chief of Innovation. The third was with two senior designers on the mobile team. All in all, the team, the product and the office space are great. The design team specifically is small, talented and very experienced.
