(1)
Complete online application. Submit Resume/Cover Letter/References/Scenario Email Questions. Advise: Look up "KIPP Through College" and learn about their mission/vision to better answer this scenario.
(2)
You receive an email to set up phone-screen with HR Representative (aka "Talent Acquisition Specialist" / TAS). In the email you choose a time-slot for an phone-screen interview and they request that you review all KIPP websites: National, Region, and review videos. They want you to familiarize yourself with the organization and they ask you basic questions. They want to get to know you and who you are, what your interests are in KIPP, and former experience. Last about 20-30 minutes.
(3)
Following this call, you get contacted to set up time for a Mock Virtual Advising Session with Members of the KIPP Through College Team. You are emailed the prompt before hand to prepare your Virtual Advising Session.
- This is a mock advising meeting with second year college student during spring-term. You have 10 minutes total
-The objective of the meeting is to check in on a student's career, academic, financial, and socio-emotional status in college. how would you approach the meeting knowing the following data points?
Information about the student:
- Attending UC Merced
- 2.7 GPA
- Lives off campus
Prepare to be flexible on your objectives during the advising session, during the call aim to ask questions of the student and get as much information from them as possible. (Warning: The KTC Team Member will be "acting" like the student you are expected to advise. The acting was okay at best, but bought into many stereotypical tropes of the "first-generation college, low-income, student of color struggling to find direction in life." I'd advise you to just listen to the "actor" and do you best to ask enough questions that allow you learn more about the student and what they are struggling with or what they are experiencing in life. Your experience during this part of the session is largely based of how the "actor" represents themselves and what information they choose to share. Prepare to be flexible and adaptable as much as you can. 10 Minutes is a short time period.
Following the 10 minute advising session. They will ask you 2-3 follow up questions: How do you feel the advising session went? What do you think you would do differently next time?
(4)
Following Mock Advising Session, you get follow up calls from Talent Acquisition Specialist and they review your experience during the Virtual Session. Usually this call happens the same day as your virtual interview. I advise you to ask more critical questions of the work and the day-to-day duties and how KIPP approaches this work. KIPP placed much value in building relationships with students, but I did not find much evidence to that when the work was described to me.
