I sent a writing sample to my future editor by email after I heard that the newspaper was looking for more writers. My work and, subsequently I, was selected for the position of staff writer following review. The goal of this selection process via writing samples was to check for originality of prose and mechanical skills. At this newspaper, the process is very much handing down a torch.
