Initially applied for a job at J.Crew Factory and was immediately offered a job. Management was nice and friendly. Questions during the interview were general "about you" questions to see if the person would suit the job and vice versa. Then transferred to Madewell and initial impression of store director was great -- seemed passionate about her job/company and seemed genuinely invested in getting to know the associate candidates. Interview process was the same as for J.Crew and asked generic "about you" questions, again to see if you would be a suitable fit in terms of personality/character/style rather than skill sets.

It took quite awhile to find a time that worked for me since I was away at school. Another issue was that one of the managers unfortunately broke their nose. We did a phone interview first, then one in person. The staff members I spoke with were super nice and responded very quickly to any questions I had.

I was asked standard questions about the brand, why I would like to work at the brand, what would you recommend to a customer, how have you dealt with a difficult customer in the past, etc.

I applied for the Sales Associate ad and was emailed the next day that they wanted to meet with me! She said she wanted to meet in a coffee shop which I thought was a little strange and unprofessional, but I went with it. I didn't meet with the original girl I was corresponding with because she had a meeting. The girl I met with was nice and the interview went well I thought, although she didn't really ask me anything related to the job. They were hiring me for Sales Support but I told them I applied for Sales Associate which I was kind of upset about but I figured hey it's still a job. She asked me what hourly pay I was looking for which made me uncomfortable because I wasn't prepared for that. I told her 11-12/hr based on what I'd seen here on Glassdoor. She said that was on the higher end of what they pay but I didn't say I wasn't open to a lower pay. The interview went very quickly, about 10 minutes long. It was strange but she said they wanted to do a second interview so I was like okay cool! I met with the original girl I was emailing the second time I went in for an interview. It was at the same coffee shop. She didn't really ask me about my previous experience in retail which I had about 2.5 years of. I thought it was really strange that I wasn't being asked normal interview questions that I had prepared for. I felt like they couldn't get a sense of the kind of employee I would be even if they chose to hire me. She asked me the same question about the salary as the other girl did. I gave a little bit of a lower answer, 10-11/hr. She said it was a little high so I told her I was open to lower if necessary. It was the same kind of deal except I felt like we really hit it off and she was really nice. I felt like I'd gotten the job. The interview only lasted about 10 minutes again. She said I'd hear back from them in a few days.
