Firstly, i had a telephone interview with the MD of the company which i though is strange, but ok, it's a small company. This conversation went very well and he just deep dived into my background and wanted to know my experience level for different network vendor's. He seemed happy, and i did too. He proceeded to tell me that he was looking for a senior network administrator, who one day could be part of design and system architecture. This was all well and good. I was offered a face to face interview. I could detect immediately from his systems engineer who attended the interview along with the MD, that this position was under-scoped in the job specification. I like to be prepared for interviews, so i went thoroughly through the Job spec the night before and made sure that i ticked 90% of what they wanted. Once the chat progressed, the feeling was that i have been providing more of a service based role and not a design function. They wanted someone with a year or more Firewall experience on a specific vendor(this was previously talked about in a phone interview, they had full detail from that on my experience with the vendor product). So in hindsight, if they advertise a role. Stick to the Job Spec, otherwise hire for a network design architect or better yet, hire a Multi systems architect. Look at your candidates CV and read there level of experience, have a phone interview and get the key things you want ticked off before you go wasting the candidates time and money traveling around to make face to face interviews that we should never of attended......
