      Candidatura

Candidatei-me online. O processo levou 2 semanas. Fiz uma entrevista na empresa Midwest Animal Hospital (Orland Park, IL).

      Entrevista

This place absolutely discriminated against me due to my disability, even though all job tasks were things I am capable of, and I have 10+ years of animal experience. I had an initial interview that went great — I mentioned my disability by name (which maybe was my mistake, but I wanted it to be known in case I needed slight accomodations, like carrying a water bottle, which FYI they’re legally required to provide) and that I had been looking for a job that wasn’t just standing still all day or sitting at a desk all day (which this job wasn’t either). She asked about my experience with animals and seemed pleasantly surprised at how knowledgeable I seemed on the animal related questions she asked. They then had me come back to do an unpaid “work interview,” which I already thought was odd, but I went ahead and did it. The person who trained me seemed really nice, and was using language as if I’d already been hired (“you WILL be doing this” “you’ll come in at X time” etc etc) and was explaining in depth details of the job that I can’t imagine they’d be telling someone who was not hired (as in, gave me a tour, showed me where everything was, etc.). Everything went great with that, and afterwards I was told I’d get an email on that Monday with details on when to start soon after, but I did not. I followed up a few days later by email, and was told “we selected another candidate.” Okay, little odd that they didn’t inform me of that, but sure, it happens. Until the very next day, EXACT job listing was again posted, but with a COMPLETELY different description, that included TONS of tasks that were NEVER mentioned in EITHER of my interviews. Said things like “we need someone who is very physically active, and able to do things like carrying 50+ lb boxes, changing outside trash cans, being able to be on their feet for 8+ hours,” etc. that did not seem relevant to the position, and were not mentioned AT ALL even in the “work interview” where I was basically walked through a day of work, and did free labor for them. The language used in the updated description was very strange, and implied that they’d assumed I was unable to do these things (which actually, they all were things I am fully able to do lol), and updated the description to show that it was extremely physically oriented, even though the work interview did not make it seem that way in the slightest, other than walking/feeding dogs and cleaning. I also had a friend working there at the time, which is why I initially applied, and she ended up quitting only weeks after this, because of how toxic the work environment was — gossip, cliques, bullying, you name it. This was the absolute weirdest and frustrating experience I’ve ever had at any job interview. Oh, and was also told that being a KENNEL CLEANER, NOT a vet tech even though that was listed as well, means part of the job is being expected to hold dogs down while the vet puts them down - for $14 an hour….
