      Candidatura

Candidatei-me online. Fiz uma entrevista na empresa New York Business Roundtable (New York, NY).

      Entrevista

The (repeated) email, phone and in-person interview was a pedantic, ultimately pointless experience, The company president (who is married to the founder) is the point of contact. Leading up to the phone interview, I was repeatedly peppered with one vague question at a time, followed by a request to elaborate. The line of questioning mainly centered on what I had heard "in the market" about Capital Roundtable and if I thought what I had heard was accurate I responded falsely by telling her the company had a stellar reputation, which seemingly did the trick as far as filling the never-ending need for validation. They like to think highly of what they do, which is actually mediocre. The phone interview lasted a half-hour. I then got an email requesting I come in for an interview. Simple enough, but the email included another question: Could I please explain just why I had said I found Capital Roundtable appealing and interesting? I replied to confirm the in-person interview and also restated what I had answered in the phone interview. ANOTHER email followed: Could I explain what I brought to an organization in addition to experience and skill, like how would I describe my personality in the workplace. I responded with a bulleted list describing myself, ending the email back-forth in the definitive with "I will go into greater detail once we meet in-person. Until then..." The in-person interview went fine enough. There is a copyediting test--easy enough to be both harmless and insulting to the intelligence of anyone who can read or write closely. The interview was concluded with the request I follow up by writing ANOTHER email explaining what I enjoyed about the meeting and why Capital Roundtable is a good place to work, Little did I realize, the entire nauseating, cross-platform exercise--which amounted to little more than soothing a narcissistic need for approval--was about reach its insulting finale. Anyone could have seen it coming. I did as asked. The email I wrote, sent and immediately forgot about emphatically reinforced the puffery I had been practically led to answer and--of course--working at Capital Roundtable would be great, A week passed by before I noticed a response. It was a quasi-apology--they have been crazy busy, as I might well imagine, after all--but they are still far off from hiring, and might be for some time. I was asked to keep the door open. But, in the meantime, if I did not mind, could I email whatI liked about Capital Roundtable?

It’s certainly disappointing to learn how upset the candidate is. It’s never easy to make choices about who to hire or not but we always try to be kind and gentle with the process. We do appreciate the candidate sharing their thoughts. As a company, we’re always looking to improve the candidate experience, and we take their feedback to heart.
