I did a phone screen with a recruiter, who was very nice. Then I did a virtual 1:1 with the hiring manager. At the end he was up front and said he wanted me to come on site, so it went well. I was working with the recruiter to set that up when she said we needed to speak. Apparently a higher up told her I had to move to the site for the role. It was a commutable distance, I am a professional, and my role would not in any way impact operations if I could not make it in due to inclement weather. This role was more of a support role, where people sometimes work remotely. I also grew up in this area and have driven in snow for 20 years. People commute all the time from this area to Detroit and vice versa. This requirement was not disclosed up front or listed in the job description. I told her no I would not relocate since they would not pay for the relocation and the job was on the low end of the range for this type of role. The best part is this higher up works remote so it's okay for him to not be near a site but he wanted someone to move for an underpaid role (much less money than he makes) in a little-known company? What hypocrisy! Funny enough, they have had 0 people apply in the last two months. The recruiter told me with my qualifications I'll have no problem getting a similar role. At least she was honest.
She was unfortunately put in a bad position by someone higher up who's an inconsiderate jerk. He definitely would not have done what he was asking me to do. People have families man. Good job turning away qualified candidates. This in a remote area outside Detroit where you'll have a hard time and most people will have to commute there!
AVOID!
