The process was very rushed initially, but then slowed down one I pushed back on how fast it was going. I first spoke with one of the "higher ups" on the phone. The interview went well, and they wanted me to come in ASAP for an in-person interview. This is where it gets a little disheveled. In my gut, I didn't have a good feeling about the company, but I wanted to keep my mind open because at this point, I had only had a phone interview. Let me also say that I live out of town, so I was gonna need a little more than 1 week to make arrangements. This was also right before the holidays, so travel was getting expensive.
Originally, they gave me 1 week's notice and $160 to get to Chicago. I looked up flights, and just for a flight, the minimum it would cost me was $500. This did not include hotel, food or transportation to and from the airports. When I told them that I didn't think I could make the budget work, the VP I had been talking to said "look on Groupon for a deal." I was shocked, to say the least. My family owns an IT company, and when talking to talent acquisition at the company and asking their opinion about it (and whether I should pay the difference), they were even more appalled than I was and told me it wasn't worth it. I emailed the guy back, respectfully declining and telling them that I was just not able to afford the travel with such a short time table and the holidays coming up - forking out the $350 difference just for the flight for a job that I may not even get - it wasn't worth it.
They came back and countered and said I could come out in a few weeks when flight prices were decreased, and they would give me $350 total. This still wouldn't cover everything, but luckily, I have a friend who lives in the city who offered to pick me up from the airport and that I could stay at her place. I was also able to book one of my flights with points. In the end, I still barely came under the $350 mark, even with those money savers.
I took a sick day from work to come do the interview, and they had a full day planned for me. I met with more account managers, the owner (which was unexpected because he wasn't supposed to be in town), and a few of the people took me out to lunch. I was still a little hesitant from the whole debacle about my travel, and I was already cautious about the company ("a financially stable company would be able to pay your way into town, no matter the cost").
The whole time I was there, they made it seem like the one day I took off from work was not enough time and that my commitment to the company wasn't here. They even said that one guy used a whole week of vacation to come "explore" the company and get to know everyone better (I would say that guy was unemployed).
I used a better part of the afternoon putting together recommendations for a presentation about a client and what I would suggest to make their online presence stronger. I presented to the account manager of that position and the VP I originally spoke with. After the presentation was over, they shook my hand, told me they were gonna talk it over and they would get back to me by the end of the week (they move pretty fast there with job opportunities). So I took my stuff, packed up and headed back to the airport.
And I literally never heard from them again. No job offer. No rejection. Nothing. I joke and say that for all I know, the offer is still open with them, almost 4 months later.
The whole interview process was very unprofessional, in my opinion, and in the end, I see their lack of offer/rejection a blessing in disguise. (Who would want to work for a company like that anyway?)
