      Entrevista para Assistant Professor, Sociology

      23 de mai. de 2018
      Candidato(a) sigiloso(a) à entrevista
      Lake Worth, FL
      Nenhuma oferta
      Experiência negativa
Entrevista com nível médio de dificuldade

      Candidatura

Candidatei-me online. O processo levou 2 meses. Fui entrevistado pela Palm Beach State College (Lake Worth, FL) em mar. de 2018

      Entrevista

After the initial application submission, I was sent instructions to complete an interview using an app. You are given about 3-5 minutes to respond to each question. The app uses your camera's phone, yet no one is actually live listening to your responses. Instead, they are saved and reviewed later. You are given the question with about a minute to consider a response. Most questions were pretty common. For example, one question asked about diversity while another asked about the candidate's teaching philosophy. You only get one chance on each question. This means that if you mess up, lose your train of thought, or say, get a phone call during the app interview, that will all be recorded. There were 5 total questions. The entire process took approximately 30 minutes. A couple of weeks after completing the app interview, I received an email from Palm Beach State indicating that they wanted me to participate in a face-to-face interview. This email came with instructions specifically pertaining to the number of interview panelists as well as others I would meet. This included the dean of the college as some other administrators. This email came 2 weeks before Spring Break. At the time of the interview, I lived in DFW, Texas. Immediately, went online looking for plane tickets. The cheapest I found was $682. This was unfortunate since the email also stated that Palm Beach State would only reimburse up to $400 travel expenses. This seemed odd as most people know that purchasing a round trip ticket given that distance and with only 2 weeks notice will be well above that amount. This also did not include any lodging, food, or transportation costs once on the ground in south Florida. The day of the interview was split up into 3 main parts. First, I met with the administrator for sociology. I won't include any specific names here, but she was very kind, helpful, and energetic. This administrator had only been on the job for 3 months. She informed me that the college was experiencing some transition issues. This should have been a red flag but I was already committed to taking this job. After about 10 minutes of waiting, I was brought into a classroom, put on a computer and asked to complete an essay. There were just a few questions that I expanded on significantly. I was given around 45 minutes to complete the essay. Again, questions were pretty standard for higher education. "How does your specific teaching philosophy line up with the mission statement of Palm Beach State College?" After completing the essay, the administrator brought me back to the main office. Then, 15 minutes later, I sat with the interview panel in another classroom. Immediately after the panel interview, they had me perform a teaching demonstration. The topic was sexual harassment. This topic was predetermined by the college and given to me in the email about the face-to-face interview. This gave plenty of time to create a presentation, provide handouts, and piece together a brief question and answer session. The length of the teaching demonstration was 20 minutes. Pretty basic stuff. Talked about quid pro quo and hostile work environment. Additionally, I discussed major social institutions and how they related to sexual harassment, particularly of perpetrators. The demonstration seemed very well received. After this portion, there was another waiting period. Then, I sat down 1-1 with the dean of students Roughly two weeks after this interview, I had not heard a word from Palm Beach State about the job. So, I send an email to the administrator who helped me through the process. She said that they would be letting everyone know "soon." Two weeks after that, still nothing. At this point, contact was made with a higher up administrator. This time, I was told that by the end of the week, all candidates would hear about their status whether or not they got the job. End of the week arrives, nothing. Two weeks after this, I have pretty much given up but would like the professional courtesy of getting at least an email saying someone else has been hired. Nothing. Then, I call the sociology administrator again. She says that someone in HR quit recently and the entire college is in shambles. Apparently, I will hear soon. This was not good enough, so I call the main administrator and leave a message. Later that day, (this is now the month of May and the interview was in March) I get an email saying the position was never filled. No one was hired for the position. Absolute nonsense. The HR department at Palm Beach State is a disaster. Avoid dealing with these people at all costs. I am not sure what issues they have or what kind of Busch League operation they are running over there, but this was overwhelmingly frustrating.

      Perguntas de entrevista [1]

      Pergunta 1

"How would you handle a problem student or a student that dominates the discussion or lecture."
