The interview process was difficult to understand and varied greatly by interviewer. First, I had a phone interview with HR (30 minutes), completed a leadership assessment online (45 minutes) followed by three in-person interviews (2 hours each) with 8 different people. The hiring manager and a colleague of hers wanted to chat for an hour each on interview 1. They didn't have specific questions and it was more of an informal conversation. I walked out of that one feeling like it was a great fit and that we clicked. I also interviewed with the Senior VP of the Foundation and two more members of the donor relations team, both of which were also very casual. Again, felt like those interviews went wonderfully, and felt like I was going to get an offer for sure. The 3rd interview day was first a member of the donor relations team, who had good questions and we had a great conversation as well. The final interview was with two other VPs. This was unlike any of the other interviews and felt like they had already made up their opinion of me, as they spoke very condescendingly, talked more about themselves and their programs, and the few questions they did ask felt like they were grilling me and they didn't seem to listen to the answers. One of the VPs spent about 15 minutes on their phone while I was talking. In between the first three interviews, the hiring manager was very responsive and kept me informed. After the 3rd interview, all correspondence stopped from her. Almost a month after the 3rd interview, I received a generic email from HR letting me know they were going to keep the position open to find the right candidate. I can't say I was surprised, based on how the last interview went, but I was disappointed, given how well the first ones went. I don't mind the learning process of doing several interviews, meeting a lot of the team, etc. What leaves a bad taste in my mouth was what happened after the 3rd interview and the total shut off of all communication. I feel like when a candidate spends 8+ hours with you, at least have the decency to call them. They told me during the process that the job has been open for more than 18 months, and I think I might know why.
