Entrevista para Amazing Software Engineer - Generalist

      Entrevista

I had an interview process very similar to others on this site. I received a link to an online screening page asking questions based on graph algorithms, probability, databases and why you want to work for the company. I am quite sure I answered these questions correctly and I received e-mail confirmation that I had passed the "initial screening process" but that they didn't think my skill set matched the position. Overall, it was a very negative experience. It seems like they send out the screening questions in lieu of actually looking at your resume. It doesn't seem proper that I was asked to do a one hour online screening if the skill set on my resume wasn't sufficient for the job. It's basically appears to be a cop out - they send anyone from a good school through the screening process before they check to see if you even meet their arbitrary qualifications (which aren't stated anywhere). Additionally, their lack of professionalism was somewhat off-putting. I was addressed very informally by them (being assigned a nickname by them), but I felt like they still expected me to keep a very professional attitude. This setup a very strange interaction in which I felt like I was being addressed in a manner that wasn't appropriate to someone of my experience level or skill level.

      Entrevista

They have a pretty standard online test for engineering positions, which consists of 5 questions covering databases, graph traversals, and probability puzzles. You get one hour to complete their online test. They got back to me pretty quickly after I completed the test asking for a good time for a phone interview. They also asked to check out their personalization API. Their API key sign up process is pretty confusing. You get a cryptic message saying that you need to verify your email, but they don't send any registration confirmation email. What's strange is that they ask for feedback, but then they don't acknowledge the feedback you provide. A few days after I notified them about my decision not to continue the interview process I got a strange email notifying me that they have no more internship position. Recent CS grads are a better fit for them. Seasoned professionals should not waste their time.

Candidatei-me online. O processo levou 3 semanas. Fui entrevistado pela Rapleaf (San Francisco, CA) em jun. de 2010

      Entrevista

First, I was asked to take a five-question online exam consisting of the following topics: coming up with a simple database schema, discussing an algorithm to find a path between two nodes, comparing two sorting algorithms, finding a probability, and talking about why you want to work at Rapleaf. Then, I talked with the Vice President of Engineering for about an hour, during which I was given a probability-like question and a more in-depth question about finding the "lowest common duplicate" between two arrays. After that, I was asked to write a simple blackjack game in Ruby. Lastly, I was flown out for about eight hours of interviews including lunch and a presentation on a topic of my choice. I stumbled on several of the algorithmic questions and pretty much knew by the end of it that I was not going to receive an offer. I only thought that one of them was out of my reach even after a hint, but your mileage may vary. All communications were quick, including the bad news at the end. Everybody was nice, but seemed very focused on academics/computing at, perhaps, the expense of a well-rounded life -- I did not get any sense of what anybody did outside of work or for fun (outside of programming, of course). The office is very open. Other than that, there are several conference rooms along the sides of the building.
