I originally applied to the open position on Indeed on Sunday August 13th. I had to take a leadership assessment on Indeed before the application was considered complete. Later that same evening I received a message through Indeed from the DM for Ross saying she wanted to set up an interview by phone. We interviewed on Wednesday the 16th. The interview was extensive and went for just shy of one hour. I was asked several questions around experience in interviewing, hiring, scheduling, training, management, experience in reviewing P&L and other business reports to make decisions, holding team members accountable and more. The DM really took her time to get to know me and my experience. She was very pleasant to speak with. On Friday August 18th I received a call from the SM of the location I had applied for asking for a call back to set up another interview with her by phone as well. Our interview went for about 40 minutes give or take. She asked me many of the same questions that the DM had asked. Today - Sunday August 20th - I received a phone call from the SM basically offering me the position. I had a strong feeling after my interview with the DM that I would get it but the SM confirmed it today, I had to submit 4 references for the DM to call. The SM said an official offer should come before the end of the week. Once they get all of the paperwork on a chosen applicant together that paperwork is then submitted to the DM’s boss who to my understanding is the individual that makes the decision as to what kind of salary will be offered to the selected candidate.
Key takeway details for those who might be going through the process or thinking about applying: - The ASM position is an hourly position, not salaried. The only thing that is salaried about the position is the 5 hours of overtime that the position works every pay period. The 5 hours of overtime is paid at time and a half. - There is only one ASM per store location along with one SM. - The ASM position works a schedule of 45 hours each week with shifts that vary from open to mid to close. The DM and SM both said that generally the ASM will work 3 opening shifts, 1 mid shift and 2 closing shifts a week. - The ASM is responsible for assisting the SM in all areas of store operations. Hiring and scheduling of associates are two key responsibilites of the ASM position. - The company offers the same standard benefits that most other companies offer. PTO, Sick time, 401k, etc. - The starting salary for the position is $16.00-16.50 an hour. But the DM said that they do take experience into account on salary and it seemed like she was open to some willingess to negotiate when I said I would need a higher starting salary. - The company is closed on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. - The ASM serves as a Manager on Duty (MOD) at all times while clocked in.
**UPDATE: I received an unexpected offer with a different company with a much higher salary than what I am expecting I will get here. I will review this offer on Monday when I receive it but if it is not at the level of my second offer that I was extended today I will be declining it.**
**UPDATE (x2): I finally received my proposed offer of employment from the DM today. Upon reviewing the contract I was shocked to find a salary that was not the minimum that I was quite clear to the DM on in our interview that I would require in order to consider accepting any proposed offer of employment. A LOT is asked and expected of an ASM for Ross and I was not going to budge on my salary requirement. But it was okay anyway's because I had already accepted the offer from the other company I mentioned. The salary offered was much higher and not one I would get from Ross even if I wanted to try. I wish them the best luck in finding a good candidate to fill their ASM opening at Ross.**

Multiple questions in several different areas - leadership/management, merchandising, hiring and interviewing, what experience did I have in administering formal discipline to associates, did I have experience in termination of associates, what experience did I have in shrink and loss prevention, how would I hold an associate who has an issue with tardiness or absences accountable, what is my leadership style, how do I communicate.....they are very thorough in getting to know you and your experience to truly make sure you are the right fit. But if you are experienced in retail and are truly qualified to be considered for the position you should not have any problems in answering the questions.
