The interview was very candid and polite, however the interviewers had a really hard time actually selling the role to a prospective candidate like myself. Their main selling point was that candidates would gain experience and training, but no benefits or compensation for overtime was mentioned during the course of the interview.
Candidates seem to be expected to respond to calls on weekends and all-hours since high-priority clientele are based in the United States. It would seem that they hope to bring more Irish talent into the sector; Compositors especially. 150+ staff are currently working for the company, some are remote and some are freelance. They are a small team, but I'm given the impression they are desperate to find staff to cover shifts on the weekends.
Even though the salary bracket was left undisclosed when the topic arose (twice), I was asked to reveal my current salary. I was informed the figure being offered was based on 'current' experience, however very few questions were asked about my previous experience in the actual interview. Having said that, my CV is quite detailed... I walked away without gaining knowledge about the culture of the team or the company – Other than a few tidbits about office drama or dealing with demanding clients...
Interns are apparently being paid now. This wasn't always the case, but it's still very much left entirely up to the editors to give them experience on projects. Otherwise, they'd be running errands for them.
