I recently was interviewed by the Director for Senior Engineering Manager role. With all due respect wanted to share some feedback. When I was asked what is day to day engagement with the engineers, I responded saying 1. I ensure that the work being picked based on roadmap priority 2. I check with of there are any issues they are facing. If issue on the requirements I pull the product to ensure they get needed clarifications in a timely manner and if it’s a technical challenge I pair up with them to ensure they are heading in the right direction else assist them towards the right path. If it’s a time sensitive thing and need quick turnaround might pull in the staff/principal engineer to get quick results. 3. Also I maintain a rapport to the point that if I feel the engineers are low, they want to just vent out on something I give them the psychological safety so they can converse with me on any issue and motivate them as needed. 4. Also ensure that there is no micro management but needed level of help. To the extent I am aware that’s the industry standard norm, would appreciate if you could let me know if there is a better level of engagement so I can improve on it. The interview started at 4.30 pm, there was 5 mins of introduction on both the sides. After she asked the above question, at 4.41 she asked me if I have any questions for her. I was astonished at that one answer she chose to discontinue and asked me if I had any questions. I asked her and few questions. After 10 mins she ends abruptly and says thank you for your time. Since beginning of the interview she was least engaged and had a level disinterest in the conversation. Honestly I was surprised when someone disqualified you for a crucial EM role based on just one question. Else if there was desired candidate then you shouldn’t have opted to interview me. For EM roles, atleast 5-6 rounds are conducted to evaluate their leadership and technical skills. With the least level of interest and engagement first time I ever come across such interview. Thought of giving this candid feedback so you maybe aware and don’t be surprised if you loose good candidates
