Fairly standard interview process, albeit possibly a bit more involved but since it was for a lead position I would expect that. What became a negative experience was once I verbally accepted the offer, had a few email exchanges about questions around their outside work policy, then they stopped responding to emails altogether. I teach online and sometimes do other freelance after hours, which was seen as a positive during my interviews in terms of leadership experience. After I accepted their offer I wanted to get the formality of them approving that outside work they were already aware of out of the way as I've done with all the other 11+ studios I've worked for over the last decade. Then they sent a policy they had yet to discuss with me during my interviews that stated all outside work that's commercial will be refused. I asked a few questions to get clarity on the subject since I've never seen any policy this strongly worded. After I responded to their questions about my work and asked a few of my own I never heard from them again. Not even an acknowledgment of having received my email, of which there were five SD employees cc'd on it. One month passed, still no response. My original start date, came and went, all with the automated "Welcome to Splash Damage" email sent to me by accident I guess. Coincidentally an independent recruiter reached out to me about this same position saying I'd be a good fit. I guess SD started searching for someone to replace me and didn't let me know they've rescinded their offer. I sent one final request for reply to my previous email and it's been a week since then so I'm here reporting the experience so other's can temper their expectations interacting with SD even after you get an offer. I would hope this is an outlier in terms of how they deal with candidates they've offered a job to. Update: After a third email finally telling them I've accepted another offer since I've not heard back from them for more than a month and I see the position is advertised again on their site, they finally responded. They apologized for the lack of communication and said 'Unfortunately, your request to continue with your other sources of income did not meet with Splash’s ways of working.' So just be aware, even if it's brought up in a positive light in your interview process that you freelance or teach, they will not allow you to continue to do it and work at SD. Every studio has some clause in the contract about outside work, but is usually easy to get approved through. But SD's strict policy is one I've never seen or heard of before in my decade in the industry and they do not communicate it to you until after you've verbally accepted an offer. So hopefully this review of the interview process will help shed light on a policy they may not openly share with you and can save you time from applying if you do freelance or teach on the side.
