In the PICU, I worked with a pediatric patient who became very agitated during care. The patient was non-verbal and responded to stimuli by becoming physically resistant. I recognized that the environment might be overwhelming, so I lowered the noise level, spoke in a calm tone, and involved the parent to help comfort the patient. By adjusting my approach and focusing on de-escalation, I was able to safely complete the necessary care. That experience reinforced for me that behavior is often a form of communication.
