PhD hiring process. Phone interview with technical expert then hiring manager. Flew out 2 weeks later for onsite interview. Gave a seminar and had 30 minute interviews with 6 people. Lunch with the group of scientists I would be working with.

If there is no real world application of your PhD work, why did you do it?

I got an email from the HR recruiter asking my availability for a phone screen. I had to send a follow up email after not hearing back for two weeks, seemed very unprofessional. After the phone screen I was asked to have a phone interview with the hiring manager. Directly after the phone interview ended I was contacted to schedule an onsite interview. Everyone was very friendly onsite except for the hiring manager who seemed to have made up their mind about me before I got there. Easy behavioral questions, a review of your resume, everything seemed to go well. I followed up three weeks after the interview and heard nothing. They sent an automated rejection email four weeks later.

For a Ph.D. candidate, the interview typically begins with a seminar followed by a full day of interviews to assess your strengths and weaknesses in different areas: technical, leadership, motivation, commitment, and strategic thinking, etc.
