After the application, I was invited to a screen call and told I would "definitely hear back, either way," after which I received no rejection notification. There was a point in the interview where both parties had realised the role wasn't a great fit, and the interviewer shifted to complimenting me on my personality. It felt a little like guilty conscience flattery, which just isn't necessary or a good use of anyone's time.
