Johns Hopkins has lower market salaries than other universities in the Baltimore-DC metro area. To add insult to injury, I was interviewing for a development (fundraising) position, and the recruiter pushed me toward a job for someone with 3 years of experience (I have 10 years in the game.) For additional context, I'm an Ivy League grad and happen to be a woman of color. I was really insulted that I would be pushed to a job so junior to my skills and experiences. If you've ever been a contractor or independent consultant, don't bother applying as there is a lot of bias against these professionals at Hopkins which was clear during the recruiting process. My interaction with interviewing at Hopkins was so negative that it was a key factor in my leaving the fundraising profession and the nonprofit sector as a whole.
