      Entrevista

DO NOT INTERVIEW WITH THIS COMPANY!!!!!!! RUN AWAY FROM THEM, FAST! AND STAY AWAY!!!!!! I interviewed for a “Social Media Editor/Coordinator” position with The Miami Times. To begin, I did not apply for this position. The company reached out to be through a recommendation. I asked to see the position description in writing and they could not provide it (strike 1). Essentially, I was told the position would manage social media accounts, update their website, develop their news app, produce a digital news series once a week and more. When I spoke with the publisher and hiring manager, the conversation was very candid. They are very unhappy with the person in the current role and were looking for a replacement. They want someone who eats, sleep and breathes breaking news and news. The only problem with that is breaking news cannot be done by ONE SOLE person. Breaking News requires a TEAM of people which they do not understand. I believe that is why the one person in the current role cannot excel. They seem like they treat their employees like slaves and have no remorse for any mistakes. (I’ve heard personal encounters about the treatment from several other people who have worked there). They often mentioned things like “If you know you are going out to a party, do not put a breaking news story as a featured story on the site” which shows there is no fine line between home and work life (strike 2). I found myself repeatedly having to prove MY WORTH to a company that sought me out to work for them. I have had experience working with company that range from 50k to 1M followers and my own personal accounts has more followers than this publication. I have proved my worth when it comes to pay to other companies. This company felt they could disrespectfully lowball me in terms of pay. They offered $13.50/hr for a position whose nationality average starts at $23/hr. Unfortunately, during the negotiations process the publisher and hiring manager began to become rude and hostile. They tired to justify by they believe I should accept $13.50. Early on, I was sold that the company is 95 years old, they have clout which provides access to events, and that I would creative freedom to do as I please with the sites on a digital space. Now, as a 95 year old company with clout requesting such a heavy work load from someone, I believe they pay should reflect as such. Also, they tried to justify their pay reasoning behind the fact that I have not had permanent positions but contract position at previous places of employment. Contract positions and all of my previous internships were starting at WAY more than $13.50 so there’s no way I can go back in terms of pay (strike 3). Their hostility and rude demeanor during the negotiations process turned me off from the company. Not to mention, their style of journalism is HIGHLY UNORIGINAL and UNETHICAL. Within a digital space, they need to undergo an entire makeover and whoever would accept would have to do that. Overall, I do not think anyone should accept this position because the company needs to learn that if they want high caliber work and employees they need to pay for it.
