Submitted my resume through my campus career center. I was contacted about two weeks later by a recruiter with an interview slot on campus. When I walk in the room, the first thing my interviewer does is give me a coding problem that's described on a sheet of paper. He tells me to read it and solve it on the whiteboard. I'm surprised by this because there's usually a bit of introduction and behavioral questions at the start.
I take a couple minutes to read it and jot down some notes, then start drawing some examples on the whiteboard and talk through different approaches. As I'm talking, he doesn't really look up from the computer and it doesn't really seem like he's listening. I start to get annoyed by this but I keep talking and start coding. I ended up running out of time at the end but if I had about 3 more minutes I would have finished. I get a rejection email a few days later.
Overall I'm very disappointed by the process. I heard that Thumbtack was a fun place to work with a great culture, but it seems like during the interview the only thing they cared about was whether I could code and solve the problem. They didn't seem like they wanted to get to know me at all, and the interviewer was very cold during the entire process. The recruiter was very friendly though, but based on my experience during this interview Thumbtack doesn't seem like somewhere I'd want to work.

One round of recruiter call, the recruiter rescheduled the call 5 times (not exaggerating). when we finally got on the call he sounded unenthusiastic about the company, lots of sighs, even said that he's already in a friday mood (it was a wednesday). Asked me about what I knew about the company, I gave him a high level description, he made fun of me for not giving detailed enough info and not doing my research before the interview.. overall he came of as rude. will not be moving forward with them. He also seemed very stuck on the leveling of the position, this could be a good thing but I've never had a recruiter needing me to have the exact title from my last company, as far as I know, these titles mean different things at different companies.

The entire interview process was straightforward and efficient. The recruiter was thorough in explaining the nuances of the role and steps of the interview process during our initial call. After the technical interview (online challenge via Hackerrank), he prepped me for the virtual onsite and made sure I felt confident and prepared. (I'm interviewing at several different companies and many of them don't even offer a prep call or guidance along the way.) This left me with a really positive impression about Thumbtack overall. I didn't receive an offer, but my experience throughout the process was positive and the recruiter said he would let me know if they other roles open where I might be a better fit, which I appreciated. Keeping my fingers crossed to hear from them in the future.

Not great. Would not recommend applying to this company but do so at your own risk. Person interviewing me seemed nice though. They did not seem to know what they wanted from me as an engineer.
