From start to finish, the experience was underwhelming. The initial recruiter seemed unprepared and unable to clearly articulate the role, the team setup, or even basic details about the company culture. It felt like I was being rushed through a process that they didn’t understand themselves. There were long wait times between stages, with no communication or updates in between a basic level of respect that was noticeably lacking. Unfortunately, it didn’t improve with the two managers I later interviewed with. Both came across as disinterested and robotic, offering no enthusiasm for the role, the team, or the company. There was zero effort to explain what success looks like in the position, what the team dynamic is, or why anyone would want to work at Toast. Leadership sets the tone for a team, and based on what I experienced, I wouldn’t feel comfortable working alongside or being led by managers who lack engagement, curiosity, or even the ability to hold a two-way conversation. Interviews are a reflection of company culture — and this one spoke volumes.
