I met with the top brass of the Criminal Division, in the General Crimes Unit. They were affable, engaged and charming. The very top level attorney made time to speak and meet with me and I got a sense that people loved working there. That impression did not match the reality of working there.

Created an account at jobs.gov and searched for postings at the US Attorney's Office. I submitted my resume, cover letter, and references. I received an initial screening call, and was invited to interview. No travel expenses were paid. I traveled to Washington, DC, for the interview and interviewed for the day -- roughly 5 individual interviews and 1 panel interview. Lunch was on my own, no paid for meals or coffee. Might be a good idea to take an energy bar or something to snack on throughout the day.

There are a lot of ethical issue spotters, what would you do if you learned that you did not fully turn over all discovery in a case? What if your witness committed perjury? Given the weight of the job, these are important questions. There are likely some questions that will stump your level of knowledge in legal procedure (reverse Batson challenge?), but interviewers generally tend to be interested in seeing how you think through challenging legal issues.

Initially, I found work in the office in contract position. I worked for the office for a year before this permanent position opened. Once the permanent position opened, based upon my good work record, I was encouraged to apply. After I applied, I was then interviewed by the U.S. Attorney and her Deputy. Based on the interview and internal recommendations from my supervisors and others with whom I had worked, I was offered the position on the spot.
