I had some reservations about even an "informational" phone interview with USAA after having worked in an insurance company previously, but after several requests by a well-respected executive recruiting firm to have a conversation with them, I finally gave in.
I was scheduled to meet with the SVP of HR for a one hour discussion. Being currently employed in a demanding role at a Fortune 20 company, carving an hour out of the middle of the day is not an easy task. She finally called almost 15 minutes late, had me on speakerphone with an unscheduled additional interviewer and proceeded to ask me multiple variations of the same question "So why USAA?" or "Why did you take the call to talk with us?". After 15 minutes of that, she abruptly said they were running late for another appointment and politely ended the call. Thankfully, I got 30 minutes of my day back.
I understand that USAA is well-regarded in certain circles as an employer of choice, but I was underwhelmed with my experience. Clearly, I wasn't interested in any further discussions with them for employment and hope the leave a better impression with their customers and current employees than potential ones.
