      Entrevista

      Utopix is a small Swiss company (about 20 workers) located in Montreux (about an 1h train ride from Geneva). This is a 20-years old family business privately owned and run by a mother and her adult son. They develop and sell SaaS solutions to companies working in luxury business (like watch and jewelery factories, luxury boutiques, etc). Their main product is the Centrix software platform which has several front-end components such as online/offline catalogs, repair shops, services for marketing etc. They customize the platform for each customer / project. I applied for a junior java developer position at this company which was posted online. Their job description was a very vague description of the profile required (e.g. specific IT skills were not mentioned). I was surprised that couldn't find their website [they have a graphical designer and several web developers in-house, however, they still don't have any website [as of August 2013]. I was explained, later, that they are not aiming to expand their business; besides, clients tend to rely on the word-of-mouth marketing in this kind of business.] A week later, I was contacted by a co-owner of the company and we scheduled a skype interview. The interview was a usual generic discussion about the company, their product and the career possibilities; In my turn, I presented myself, my education, experience and what kind of job I expect. Again, in a week, they contacted me again and invited for a face-to-face interview in their Montreux office. I was surprised as they refused to reimburse my upcoming travel expenses (I had to travel to Switzerland from another European country). Despite this, I decided to take a risk and traveled on my own expense. My interview took place in a small meeting room. I was interviewed twice during the same day (about 1,5hrs each time). During the first part I talked with the head of R&D and the younger co-owner of the company, and during the second part of the interview I talked with the owner / general manager of the company. During the first part they asked me about my past projects, looked into the documentation (specs) I brought with me and asked about my motivation to work for them. No technical questions were asked. After we finished, I had a short break and then I was face-to-face with the general manager for another 1,5 hours. It was, perhaps, my most bizarre interview experience I have ever had, so I try to give only facts here. She started with the question "tell me about yourself", and after I asked for a hint (trying to get her more specific), she replied "I would like to know you and your personality, are you going to be one of the guys who leaves the kitchen dirty and breadcrumbs everywhere?". She continued then, "How do you keep your work desk? do you keep it clean?", "Do you have any dangerous hobbies"? "Do you have any bad habits preventing you from working?" [the order of the questions was pretty much as during the interview] She asked me many other questions like this. At some point she even attempted to insult me [? - not sure] by telling "I know you are from Eastern Europe, but we try to trust Eastern Europeans, although we had issues in the past". The interview concluded when I was promised to be contacted in few days with their decision. Indeed, she contacted me by email and offered a contract (72.000 CHF/year, 5000 CHF annual bonus, 3000 CHF relocation package). In the meanwhile, I got some insider's info about the company (thank you, Linkedin!). Their office atmosphere is like a prison. They enforce a dress-code on their premises. They have fixed (non-flexible) work hours (8h30-12h30, lunch break, 13h30-18:00), they oblige developers to take vacations always at the same time of the year. They also like to micro-manage people at the company. In terms of IT expertise the company is very low; almost all their software is made in-house (no libs or external components are used); as a developer you are not supposed to improvise, literally _all_ design decisions are made by one person - the R&D manager. Obviously, such a work environment does not mix well with open-minded people. But the worse is the general manager, she is obsessed with order and cleanliness; she can send people home to redress if she doesn't like their style; she used to force a developer to quit smoking; she demands everyone to speak in a low voice at the office (despite the fact that developers sit separately from the managers). Without any hesitation I declined their offer. The only positive thing about the company is their location which is next to the Geneva lake and mountains (it's a hiker's paradise). The compensation, office atmosphere and career perspectives are non-attractive. Their general manager is obviously a difficult person to handle. I will not recommend this company to anyone to work for.
