Step 1: Call to describe the role. I asked about salary and benefits to make sure we won't waste our time but they could not provide answer. Step 2: Face to Face interview. I asked to have it through video call so I won't take a day off but was declined. Step 3: Coding project. Can take 8-16 hours depending on how fast someone writes code and setups project. Step 4: Call with hiring manager. At this point I explained that if they don't give me salary range and benefits I won't proceed. They knew my current salary and benefits from Step 1 but they thought that if I invest in the process I may accept. Either way, the salary was lower than my current and all the benefits much worse. I just declined at this time. The expectation should have been discussed at step 1!!
