Initial phone screen with corporate recruiter. Then I was scheduled for a 'technical' interview. Wayfair outsources all of their technical interviews to a company called Karat. It is the typical leetcode-style question. The interviewer spent probably a quarter of the time reading the questions to me and explaining how the interview would work. Then he told me there was no harm in asking questions, yet later I learned that I was penalized for asking too many questions. Overall, the problem was ironic, because all they want you to do is the most brute-force solution to some contrived problem. I was penalized for trying to organize my code cleanly, and to comment it, and for writing my test first. My problem was really just a string manipulation problem. I asked what this would have to do with the position, and the interviewer didn't know. While playing the 'thinking out loud' game, I was told time was up. The interviewer proceeded to spend the last 10 minutes of the interview talking and explaining next steps. Karat lets you have a 'redo' interview, and my second interview was exactly the same. Wayfair never watches the video of the interview, nor do they receive feedback from the interviewee. All they get to look at is a 'score' from Karat. The ironic part is that the corporate recruiter from Wayfair made a point of saying how the company was looking for creative thinkers and skilled developers who write good maintainable code. This is the exact opposite experience from the Karat interview. There was no discussion about fixing problems upstream, or implementing better solutions where appropriate. The only thing the interviewer wanted was to hack out some garbage code as fast as possible.
