Both utilize making changes to electrons which are used to represent bits data. RAM is where a computer, or CPU, does it work. A hard drive is where work is stored. Imagine a desk. The top of the desk is RAM - where work gets done. The drawers and cabinets in the desk are its Hard Drive - where work is stored.

Windows all ready uses part of your hard drive as "virtual memory". This means that when the memory of your RAM chips is exceeded by the tasks your computer is doing, it uses the hard drive space as memory. This is very slow as it requires the hard drive to spin around to access the bytes for memory use. A better idea is to get more RAM.
