      Entrevista

      TL;DR The entire technical interview felt like they are just trying to prove that I'm not a developer and they are. After seeing their 4.4 on Glassdoor, I went there with an expectation of a friendly and welcoming environment, but the experience was totally opposite. Long version: I've applied online. After a very brief and friendly phone talk with the recruiter, I've been sent a task to build a simple RESTful API with 4 methods. I've completed it using Onion-layered Architecture, with a nice separation between infrastructure and business logic and 96% test coverage on business logic and checked in my code to bitbucket in small steps as suggested. Next day, I've received a feedback that they want to proceed and invite me over for a technical interview. I've arrived 10 mins early, escorted (I would have loved to say welcomed by, but that wasn't the feeling) in by the interviewers (Solution Architect and a developer). Since I was early, the meeting room was occupied, therefore I've been offered to take some coffee (a fun part when you get to use a new coffee machine all by yourself, I thought, is this also part of the interview, your coffee machine solving skills?) After their self-introductions, I've been asked if I know what albelli is doing. I've answered directly as "You are an online photo printing business". Apparently, that was not the correct answer, so I've been asked if I haven't check their website before coming to the interview. I did, but I thought maybe I've missed something big and the interviewer looked a bit agitated, so I said: "I haven't had a chance to go into details." (Today, I've re-checked, they are an online photo printing business in a nutshell) Then the meeting room got free and we went in. I can't remember all the questions clearly, but the first 90 minutes passed with questions and answers. They had around 5-10 questions prepared, the rest was improvised on the spot. They are ranged from the difference between GET and POST (had to ask clarification whether are we talking about the meaning of it in RESTful context or in general part of HTTP protocol), and why I would prefer iteration over recursion and if I've ever heard about tail optimization. The general feeling was that both sides were trying to show that they know better than the other side, but the interviewing party had the home field advantage and they were asking the questions, but they didn't have to answer. So, I eventually lost that battle :) Then comes the SQL problem. First, a simple select, then a join. Then came the question where I had to create a complex query using 2 tables and a business rule to calculate the thickness of a package, but one of the items can stack up to 4 items and rest can't. I would say I've failed at this. Haven't been using SQL for business logic since 10 years. Eventually, using some MSDN, some StackOverflow, I've reached the expected result, while them talking about StackOverflow development. (Your job posting was on StackOverflow :) Now, 2 hours passed and I'm extremely stressed and tired, apparently, I lost this battle already. The interviewer said: "Ok, let's test your C# skills now". And then he opened notepad and told me to create a solution to find islands on a graph. I told him that I haven't had a use case for graph algorithms for a while, so I could not do it. He didn't get the clue that I'm already forfeiting and really don't wanna work there, asked me another question to remove non-unique parts of a string. I've told him no thank you, it's been more than 2 hours now and I'm tired, I would like to leave. While leaving, I've told him I was expecting the part of the interview would be discussing the case study I've sent, he told me that was a very simple task anyway. So I left. Next day, I've received a call from the recruiter (internal one, from the first phone call), asking me feedback about the interview. I gave the feedback, negative one, and thanked him for the chance. He said it's better than seeing it on Glassdoor. Also apologized that the interviewers are still getting used to doing interviews. I thanked him again for giving me a chance for being a part of their interview process trials.
