We had to join the 2016 trend — the year we first formed as an organization! As we approach 10 years as Hackensack Meridian Health, it's amazing to think of some of the things we've accomplished: 🏥 Welcoming new hospitals to our network, for a total of 18 🧪 Opening the Center for Discovery and Innovation 🥼 Celebrating the first graduating classes at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine 😷 Taking on a pandemic, including the state's first COVID-19 patient 🧬 Innovating at the forefront of care, from genetic testing to robotic surgery to AI and beyond 🪪 Creating better access for our community, including through HMH 24/7, Hospital from Home and the forthcoming Health and Wellness Center at Metropark 🏅 Most recently making history as the first hospital in NJ to make US News & World Report's top 20 nationwide And we continue to honor the foundational leadership of former co-CEO John Lloyd, and co-chairs Gordon Litwin and Joseph Simunovich. Their crucial work during our merger helped set the stage for all that we continue to accomplish today and they are all deeply missed.
Pet therapy dogs have long been making a difference for our patients. Now, they're bringing joy to our team members. Introducing Doyle and Blitzen, two of the newest and furriest members of the Hackensack Meridian family. Their job is to provide comfort and support to first responders at JFK University Medical Center who face high-stress, high-stakes situations every day. The innovative program was born from our mission to support the mental health of our team, and created by Paul, JFK's clinical supervisor of EMS, and Dennis, who oversees a similar unit at Hackensack University Medical Center. The two worked quickly to build a source of peer support and mental resilience. “The handlers themselves are trained in peer support and mental health resilience,” says Paul. “The dogs are an incredible icebreaker. They open the door for conversations and allow us to connect with team members, offering support and referring them to HMH’s vast array of resources if they need it.” Doyle and Blitzen are our first therapy dogs not here for patients or visitors, but with the sole focus on the well being of our first responders. The pups are team members' personal pets, and handlers are volunteers who are passionate about the cause. All of them undergo rigorous training to prepare for the role. The program has been met with incredible enthusiasm — and a third dog is set to join the team soon.
