Last Friday, March 7, was Employee Appreciation Day. Because I work from home and I'm hundreds of miles from the nearest office, SEH didn't throw a pizza party, give me the day off, or put a sticker above my cubicle that said, "Meets Expectations." Instead, they give me the flexibility to work from anywhere. They pay me fairly for my work and recognize my achievements. They give me opportunities to learn new things and stimulate my interests. They make sure I have the resources to do my job effectively. They consider me a collaborator, not just a cog in the wheel. They care about opportunities for my growth and the course of my career, not just the quarterly benchmarks I'm hitting. And they treat me like an adult, just like they treat all of their employees like adults. Two weeks ago, when our washing machine broke down and leaked water in the basement (along with our broken sewer pipe) on the same day that we had no heat, I didn't need to call my supervisor hat-in-hand with an hour-by-hour report: "I'm so sorry but I'm going to put in 7 hours today instead of 8...I'll work 9 tomorrow to offset it."
