From learning about the history of hashtag#Juneteenth to enjoying summer cookout dishes to supporting local black-owned businesses, these are just a few ways Veeps celebrated Juneteenth here at Verily. Thank you to our vBlack and Mosaic (allyship champions) ERGs for hosting such inspirational and educational events!
"As technology continues its quest to improve care by leveraging data sets, there are questions about bias and representation we must address. Modern techniques like deep learning and generative AI approaches must be designed to recognize these challenges,” said Andrew Trister, MD PhD, our Chief Medical and Scientific Officer, while at the inaugural HLTH Europe event this week. With co-panelists Gloria Seibert, Lucy Orr-Ewing, Ludovic d'Apréa and moderator LaShonda Anderson-Williams, they talked about the vast amount of healthcare data and how to overcome challenges to unlock its potential. Additionally, Dr. Trister noted: "We must build technology to allow people to generate data on their own outside of the healthcare system. We can augment data by patient reported outcomes via digital technology and wearables but only if the patient believes in the source and use of the results."
Benjamin Yaffe, our Head of Special Projects, had the honor of presenting Verily’s ongoing research and work in wastewater pathogen monitoring to this year’s cohort of the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology Education With Industry Program. Over a ten-month period, the fellows focus on improving technical, professional and management skills by partnering with top-tier companies. In this session, the group learned how our approach to wastewater surveillance has expanded since the pandemic to a national scale, serving as a public health monitoring tool to detect new and emerging pathogens. Additionally, they discussed ways this technology could support USAF and broader DOD operational readiness and resilience.
At AHIP 2024 last week, Verily introduced Lightpath, a personalized and dynamic chronic care solution, which will pair an AI-fueled platform with access to a deep bench of clinical experts. It is planned to be available for open enrollment in early 2026 and will help health plan members manage diabetes, obesity, and additional metabolic conditions. “We plan for the program to analyze member data to determine when to adjust and pinpoint the level of intensity that is the best for them at different points in their health journey.” - Myoung Cha, Verily Chief Product Officer
How can we realize the potential of healthcare data to transform our lives? Where will healthcare data make the most impact? How do we access the potential goldmine? These questions and more will be discussed at HLTH Europe next week in the session featuring our Chief Medical and Scientific Officer Andrew Trister, MD PhD.
Today, Verily introduced Lightpath, a personalized, AI-powered chronic care solution that will be designed to meet the changing needs of health plans and their members. The first offering, Lightpath Metabolic, will provide dynamic programs to help members with cardiometabolic diseases achieve and maintain their health goals. It is planned to be available for open enrollment in early 2026.
Our Head of Clinical Informatics Erich S. Huang, MD, PhD discussed the most promising digital tools for improving the health of people living with chronic conditions, with the goal of driving behavior change. Listen to the conversation with Ellen Beckjord, PhD, MPH of UPMC Health Plan and Gretchen Mendoza of UPMC Enterprises on the Ventured podcast.
Verily Wastewater, a wastewater-based epidemiology, can accurately and proactively measure the concentration of viral and bacterial DNA and RNA for 13+ pathogens in wastewater — in near real time. Most recently, in response to H5N1 cases, Verily scientists rapidly developed an assay to detect H5 in wastewater and tested areas in Texas where dairy cattle had tested positive. We’re currently testing for H5 at more than a hundred wastewater sites in over 40 states across the country, in partnership with WastewaterSCAN. Our work suggests that proactive wastewater surveillance testing can serve as a public health monitoring tool by detecting new and emerging animal pathogens with zoonotic potential, like H5N1.
Connect with the Verily team at AHIP 2024, and listen in with our leadership. Verily Chief Clinical Officer and Head of Health Equity, Vindell Washington, MD, MS, along with co-speakers Kendell LeBray, MPH, Kelli Tice, MD, and LaShawn McIver, MD, MPH, will discuss the steps for sustainability and growth for health equity initiatives, and the impact of politics on health equity and DEI programs. Attend this compelling session on Tuesday, June 11th at 4:30 pm PT.
U.S. adults reporting they are depressed or receiving treatment for depression. By understanding their experiences across time and in a real-world setting we can pave the way for more effective treatments. Learn about the ‘My Mental Health Journey’ longitudinal registry study that we worked with Otsuka Pharmaceutical Companies (U.S.) to launch. The aim is to advance research in depression and mental health to support the development of more precise treatment options.
