Background: The Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System for Africa and Asia (RIMES) is an international and intergovernmental institution, owned and governed by its Member States, for the generation, application, and communication of multi-hazard early warning information. RIMES was formed in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, as a collective response by countries in Africa and Asia to establish a regional early warning system within a multi-hazard framework, to strengthen preparedness and response to trans-boundary hazards.

RIMES was formally established on 30 April 2009 and registered with the United Nations on 1 July 2009. It operates from its regional early warning center located at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) campus in Pathumthani, Thailand.

Position Description: The Server Maintenance Engineer will be responsible for the installation, configuration, monitoring, maintenance, and optimization of server infrastructure supporting decision support systems (DSS), forecasting platforms, databases, and operational applications. The role focuses on ensuring high system availability, security, reliability, and performance across physical, virtual, and cloud-based environments.

Duty station: New Delhi / Noida, India (or as per project requirement)

Type of Contract: Full time, project based Contract

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

● Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, System Administration, or a related field

Experience:

● Minimum 3–5 years of experience in server administration, infrastructure maintenance, or DevOps/system engineering roles

● Experience managing Linux-based server environments (Ubuntu, CentOS, Red Hat, etc.)

● Experience with virtualization platforms and cloud infrastructure

● Familiarity with web servers (Nginx, Apache), application servers, and database servers

● Experience with system monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance optimization

● Familiarity with backup, disaster recovery, and failover mechanisms

● Experience supporting operational systems with high uptime requirements

Technical Skills (Desirable):

● Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, Proxmox)

● Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and container orchestration

● Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation

● Experience with database administration (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB)

● Familiarity with network security, firewalls, VPNs, and SSL/TLS configurations

● Experience with monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Zabbix, or Nagios

● Basic scripting skills (Bash, Python) for automation

● Basic knowledge about networking (TCP/IP, Port forwarding)

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Server Administration and Maintenance

● Install, configure, and maintain Linux and/or cloud-based server infrastructure

● Ensure the continuous operation of operational DSS and forecasting systems

● Manage server updates, patches, and security configurations

2. Infrastructure Monitoring and Optimization

● Monitor system performance, uptime, and resource utilization

● Identify and resolve infrastructure bottlenecks and system issues

● Optimize server performance for operational applications and databases

3. Deployment and DevOps Support

● Support deployment of applications, APIs, and services across development and production environments

● Assist in implementing CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment workflows

● Manage containerized environments using Docker and Kubernetes

• Security and Access Management

● Implement and maintain server security measures and access controls

● Manage network security, SSL certificates, firewall rules, VPNs, and authentication mechanisms

● Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments

• Backup and Disaster Recovery

● Implement and maintain backup and recovery procedures

● Ensure redundancy and failover mechanisms for critical systems

● Support disaster recovery planning and testing activities

• Database and Storage Support

● Support maintenance and monitoring of operational databases

● Ensure secure and efficient storage management

● Optimize database connectivity and server-side performance

• Troubleshooting and Technical Support

● Diagnose and resolve server, network, and infrastructure issues

● Provide technical support to developers, GIS experts, AI/ML teams, and operational users

● Maintain logs and incident reports for operational systems

• Documentation and Reporting

● Prepare infrastructure documentation, server inventories, and maintenance records

● Maintain configuration and deployment documentation

● Provide periodic system status and maintenance reports

• Additional Responsibilities

● Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor in line with project needs and priorities.
