Converteam's power is in helping convert it to energy. The company makes three main power conversion components: rotating machines (motors and generators), drives and converters, and automation controls. Marine and offshore clients use these parts in pumps and compressors needed for electrical propulsion and power generation onboard ships. Oil and gas companies, including Shell and Exxon Mobil, use its high-speed drives to automate plant production, while energy companies use its generators in windmill turbines. Converteam has plants in some 17 countries and sells worldwide. In 2011 General Electric acquired a 90% stake in the company for about $3.2 billion.
