InterMetro Communications hopes to take over the VoIP market city by city. The company's national, private voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network delivers long-distance phone service to telecoms providers and calling card users. InterMetro's more than 200 customers include traditional long-distance carriers, broadband companies, VoIP service providers, and wireless providers. Its VoIP network utilizes proprietary software, switching equipment, and fiber-optic lines to deliver carrier-quality VoIP services, which are typically more cost efficient than circuit-based technologies used in traditional long-distance networks. Chairman and CEO Charles Rice owns almost 40% of the company.
