Mattson Technology has avoided being taken to the mat by the brutal fluctuations of the microchip industry. The company, which went through a major restructuring in the early 21st century to cope with the worst slump the chip market ever faced, makes several types of semiconductor manufacturing gear, including systems that deposit materials onto silicon wafers, that prepare wafers for photoresist, and that etch patterns onto wafers. Top customers include Canon (19% of sales), Infineon Technologies, Samsung Electronics (10%), Toshiba Semiconductor, and United Microelectronics. Mattson gets more than three-quarters of its sales from the Asia/Pacific region.
