The company was one of the largest US providers of mortgage insurance, which protects lenders in case of borrower default. It also insured the bundles of existing loans known as structured finance products. In addition, PMI was the primary investor in the Financial Guaranty Insurance Company, which offered financial guaranty insurance on public bonds. The company's international operations provided mortgage insurance and credit enhancement services in Europe. Despite attempts to survive the real estate-market implosion, the company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2011.
