Shamir wants you to be able to see the world clearly, without the world clearly seeing your age. The firm primarily makes progressive eyeglass lenses, worn by people who need to see things up close but want to avoid that telltale sign of aging: the dreaded bifocal line. That said, it does offer bifocal and single-vision lenses. Products are marketed under the Shamir Genesis, Piccolo, and Office names, among others. They are distributed to Europe and the US through subsidiaries, including Germany's Shamir Optic and the US's Shamir Insight. Shamir also provides design services to optical lens producers. Kibbutz Shamir controls the company. In mid-2011 France's Essilor International acquired a 50% stake in Shamir.
