Screener, then CEO, then basic skill request. Then, not a single word. Literally, not a hard interview, the screener is great, very good at her job.
The CEO was tense, eating her lunch, really did not seem interested in speaking to me, and asked marketing, not PM, questions. She asked for a basic skill assignment, it took about a day, then I've never heard a word since. It was truly awful, unprofessional, and unexpected.
I understand that this role was a stretch for me, but to get no response is disrespectful at best. The assignment had me looking at competitors, which was eye-opening.
Take a look at the market opportunity here - CloseFactor has nothing new to present, and I do not expect they'll be around for the long haul. That's fine - plenty of startups are about basics, and they plan/hope to be acquired. But this is a well-established market with too many players who do a better job than CloseFactor will with their small VC investment.
I don't expect to ever hear anything from or about them. Buyer beware for all job hunters.

Talent recruiter reaches out first and consider you to be a great fit after a phone screen. After that you get to speak to the COO. After much review of the company and job description, you prepare for a 45 minute interview discussing CloseFactor's opportunity- and about the role and one of your work samples. COO provides feedback and questions your work sample. Being that he's a product guy himself that is welcoming. But if your process does not fit within the landscape of theirs, you won't be considered. Truly they are in need of design leadership, because there's not a process in place to tackle their current pain points while their UX currently isn't intuitive as they mention. If you think that mentioning your skills and experience match the job description, think again. He won't even link the job description to your interview. So you have to dig and hint exactly what they are looking for. The 1st session ran so long that he requested another session later in the day. Another welcome sight to me. I was delighted for him to be so interested in my portfolio. The thing that I was most disappointment is that I wasn't given time to ask questions at the end. After the email from talent says that there would be time for me at the end to ask questions. If you and they advocate for UX research, you have to ask questions. Their job description specifies you have to lead the design system. So I wasn't even given to opportunity to ask how their research is done or how their design system is structured today. One more thing, they have an automated email that is sent out asking me if I'm still interested in the job because I haven't responded. Clearly, they didn't stop the email automation for that message sent to me after they rejected me.
Thank you for this feedback. We very much value the experience our candidates have throughout the interview process, and as a growing startup, we will take your input to improve.

Initial phone screen with someone from HR that went well and where she was clearly excited to pass me onto the hiring manager, sensing a good fit. Next was a video call with one of the COO, who would be making this first product hire.
Despite having a reasonably impressive background and resume, it appeared as if he had no idea how to conduct an interview. He didn't seem to have bothered to review my experience prior to the call and effectively only asked one question "What did you learn at job X", which is a question so open-ended as to be almost useless. He very clearly didn't like my answers but was unable to articulate what he was actually asking for so kept repeating, "but what did you learn at job X?". It was apparent we were talking past each other but I have no idea what sort of answers he was actually looking for, as I gave very detailed answers across several roles.
He gave me some time to ask questions of my own but then cut me off at 45 minutes, despite the interview being scheduled for an hour. He did a bad job of hiding that he just wanted to get off the call. It felt pretty unprofessional. He told me the HR rep would be in touch, but no one ever bothered to follow up again. A peculiar experience.
