I have no clue if the answer is different for Engineers, but as a Geologist Strain is when forces of opposing directions are pulling on a body/medium. Stress is when the forces are exerted on a body/medium. Eg of Strain are Fracture or ductile strain, types of stress are compression, tension, and shear.
